"Instead
of focusing on control and domination, I focus on getting the horse's trust" I
have worked with horses since I was a young boy and now have 28 years of experience
in handling and working horses, both in Australia and internationally in Scotland
and America. Since
starting horses professionally, I have chosen to take any horse, regardless of
age or breeding. This variety has provided an invaluable insight into horse communication,
response, and most importantly, trust. None of which are gained without patience. Some
of these horses have been 'wild' ones that have never seen a person before. Within
3 weeks, I have had them trusting and soft enough to do what I ask, whether that
is opening gates or crossing a creek or side passing, all under saddle. I
have started many older, 'tough' horses, that other people choose not to take
and sometimes it has taken me days just to get a hand on them. I don't rush horses
and I don't tie them up or constrain them in any way. I use methods that rely
on time and patience - allowing the horse to understand and accept what we are
doing before taking the next step. I use positive instruction, using a natural
and calm approach. Small steps are taken so that they learn through understanding,
not force. These initial crucial small steps help to create a more dependable,
willing and trainable horse. I
aim to get a good head carriage, a soft mouth and a willing horse. I start horses
for endurance, pleasure, racing, children, and stock work. I also re-educate horses
and shoe problem horses, believing that they should get a second chance. We
are based on a property 15 mins drive from Glen Innes, NSW. With rolling grazing
country, rugged forested mountain terrain and three rivers, the property provides
a great environment for the education of horses. Each horse that is trained here
is taken out on the property, gaining education from our stock, unusual encounters
like startled wallabies, and traveling our varied terrain.
